Before you can install Desktop Launcher, you need to know the HTTP(S) URI used by Direct ConneX to serve resources local to your installation. This shall be called the DCX HTTP endpoint.
Direct ConneX Desktop Launcher use SSL/HTTPS to protect user credentials while in transit over the network. On some deployments, the security of SSL is managed by your IT staff and there is no configuration to be performed by the user. In other environments, SSL/HTTPS protection is handled by Direct ConneX. In the latter case, each Windows Client needs to be configured to trust the Direct ConneX “Four Walls CA 2030” certificate authority.
- To copy the certificate to the machine, start with your DCX HTTP endpoint URL, replace “https” with “http”, and append “cacert.crt” to it. For example, if your DCX HTTP endpoint is “https://192.168.1.1/”, you would get “http://192.168.1.1/cacert.crt”. Direct ConneX support staff will be happy to help you with finding the right URI to use. The resulting URI will be considered the DCX SSL CA URI.
- Open a browser that will let you download the certificate. (It is easiest to use a browser other than Firefox because Firefox will try to install the certificate into itself rather than downloading it by default. Consider using Edge, Chrome, or Internet Explorer.) Enter the DCX SSL CA URI into that browser and perform the steps necessary to save the file onto your computer.
- Open the folder containing the saved file (cacert.crt) in Windows Explorer and double-click it to open it with the default handler. You should see a dialog like:
- Go to the details tab, scroll down to the Thumbprint, and verify that it matches “2e 56 69 2c e1 02 c9 2a e4 e1 3e b8 c8 9b b8 6e 11 39 05 f4”. If the numbers do not match, you do not have the correct certificate and installing it could compromise the security of your machine:
- Return to the General tab and click “Install Certificate…”.
- Set Store Location to “Location Machine”:
- Click “Next” and answer “Yes” at the UAC prompt.
- When given the choice, choose “Place all certificates in the following store”:
- Click “Browse” and then choose “Trusted Root Certification Authorities” from the list of stores:
- Choose OK and then press Next.
- Click Finish and answer affirmatively to any further prompts.
You may now proceed with installing Desktop Launcher.
- Navigate your browser to DCX HTTP endpoint.
- Click the “Install” link and on the resulting screen click the Install button.
- When the file (setup.exe) is downloaded, launch it and proceed through the wizard.
If you encounter an error, it may be due to your machine not trusting the DirectConneX SSL Certificate Authority (if applicable to your installation). If so, please see the beginning of this document for the steps used to configure Windows to trust the SSL Certificate Authority.
If you encounter an error like “The application requires that assembly Microsoft.ReportViewer.ProcessingObjectModel Version 10.0.0.0 be installed in the Global Assembly Cache (GAC) first.” (see picture), you need to manually install the Visual Studio 2010 Report Viewer Redistributable first.
