Configure Software for iPod Scanner Sleeves

Preparation

Before getting started, you should obtain the URI of your Mobile Launcher installation and configure your iPod for network access.

DCX should provide you with the URI of your Mobile Launcher installation. It might look something like this (but this will not work for anyone): https://dcx.example.com/MobileLauncher.

iOS devices’ first-time-setup screen should guide you through connecting to a network. However, if the iPod is on the wrong network or does not display the first-time setup screen, you may enter the Settings app and go to the WiFi section to fix the network configuration.

Note: If you obtained the iPod from a third party source and it does not show the first time start screen upon being turned on, it is recommended to fully reset the device before proceeding.

To verify that your network settings are correct, please copy or type the URI for Mobile Launcher into the iOS’s native Mobile Safari app on your device. If you cannot load Mobile Launcher in Mobile Safari, you will not be able to load it in a scanner-sleeve supporting app.

Once you have verified network settings and accessibility to Mobile Launcher in Mobile Safari, you may proceed to configure the iPod to communicate with its scanner sleeve.

Installing App

Often, it is recommended to use iPods with particular iPod scanner sleeves with Mobile Launcher. Using the scanner sleeve requires installing an app which knows how to communicate with the sleeve and provides an interface that allows Mobile Launcher to access the scanner. Currently, the following supported apps are available in the App Store. It you have issues using one app, one possible debugging step is to try the alternative:

AdaptiScan

This app is listed as cheaper in the App Store. It seems to work just fine.

  1. Visit this URI on your iOS device or search “adaptiscan” in the App Store: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/adaptiscan/id517617862?mt=8
  2. Perform the usual steps to install an app.
  3. When the app finishes installing, launch it.
  4. After the app loads, you should see a blank screen with a gear in the upper-left corner.
  5. Tap the gear icon to open a settings menu and scroll down to “Default URL”.
  6. Open the Default URL setting and type or paste the Mobile Launcher URI into the setting.
  7. Press “Save” twice to set the setting and return to the main screen.
  8. To verify that the setting has been saved and will be used in the future, force quit the AdaptiScan app.
  9. Tap the AdaptiScan app’s icon on the home screen to relaunch it.

You should now be able to use Mobile Launcher and scan barcodes using the iPod barcode scanner sleeve.

SwipeTrack Browser

This app is listed as more expensive in the App Store. There are a couple minor points where it seems to behave more correctly than AdaptiScan, such as how it manages the UI and transitions when navigating between pages.

  1. Visit this URI on your iOS device or search “swipetrack browser” in the App Store: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/swipetrack-browser/id452549302?mt=8
  2. Perform the usual steps to install an app.
  3. When the app finishes installing, launch it.
  4. After the app loads, you should see a blank page including an address bar.
  5. Type the Mobile Launcher URI into the address bar and press Go.
  6. Mobile Launcher should load.
  7. Scan any barcode and Mobile Launcher will automatically reconfigure SwipeTrack Browser.

Sign Out of Apple ID

It is recommended to sign out of the Apple ID used to install the app on the device before placing allowing it to be used by anyone who does not need access to the Apple ID used to configure them. If you leave the Apple ID signed in to the device, it may be abused. To sign out:

  1. Open the Settings app from the home screen.
  2. The first entry in Settings should be a display of your Apple ID. Tap that to enter its settings page.
  3. Scroll all the way down.
  4. Tap Sign Out and confirm any prompts to fully sign out of your Apple ID on the device.
